Hiring a Myanmar maid is one of the most personal decisions a Singapore household makes. You are not buying a product—you are bringing someone into your home to care for your children or your parents. This guide covers the entire journey, from confirming your eligibility to repatriation. If you read only this page, you will know what to expect. If you follow the links, you will know exactly what to do at every stage.

Most Singapore agencies quote four to eight weeks for a fresh Myanmar helper. The delay is rarely MOM. It is the chain: broker to sub-agent to agency to employer, with documents passing up and down and information lost at every handover. Training, when it happens at all, often happens after arrival—adding weeks to the front of the placement.

We removed the chain. Because we own EMK Maid School in Insein, Yangon, documents are prepared and verified before the helper flies, and training happens while the MOM paperwork is processed in parallel.

Not every case qualifies for one week—your documents must be ready, your EOP completed if you are a first-time employer, and MOM processing must run without additional requests. But for most employers, the difference is structural, not lucky.

Timeline

Before you contact any agency, you need to know whether you qualify as an employer. MOM requires you to be at least 21, not an undischarged bankrupt, and to have the mental capacity to take on employer responsibilities. MOM also considers your caregiving need and financial ability.

If you are hiring for an elderly parent who lives alone, a child or grandchild may apply on their behalf under the Sponsorship Scheme.

Before You Start

Hiring a Myanmar maid involves more than the agency fee. You will pay for the security bond ($5,000 for non-Malaysian helpers), medical insurance (minimum $15,000 coverage), personal accident insurance (minimum $40,000 coverage), the monthly levy, the helper's salary, and the Settling-In Programme.

Some of these are one-time costs. Others are recurring. Understanding the difference before you commit prevents surprises later.

What It Really Costs

The process has six stages: confirming eligibility, completing the Employer's Orientation Programme, choosing an agency, applying for the work permit, preparing for arrival (bond and insurance), and your helper's Settling-In Programme.

Each stage has deadlines. Missing one can delay your helper's arrival by weeks. Because documents are prepared at EMK before your helper flies, the MOM stage moves faster than it does with agencies that wait for overseas paperwork.

The first month sets the tone for the entire placement. Clear expectations, a written household manual, and patient communication prevent most problems before they start.

Language is a common concern. Many Myanmar helpers arrive with functional but limited English. Our Oral English Lesson Series can be a useful bridge during the early weeks—and because your helper has already completed the General Series at EMK, she will arrive with a foundation most helpers do not have.

MOM rules apply equally to all nationalities, but employers of Myanmar maids should be aware of specific points: illegal deployment, passport retention, rest day requirements, and the six-monthly medical examination.

Breaking these rules carries penalties—fines, licence revocation for agencies, and in serious cases, imprisonment.

Not every placement works out. Your helper may be homesick, your parent may not adjust, or the match may simply be wrong. What matters is how you handle it—legally, humanely, and with the agency's support if you have a replacement guarantee.

H2: Repatriation and Ending the Placement

When the placement ends—whether by mutual agreement, contract completion, or termination—you have legal obligations. You must cancel the work permit, settle outstanding salary, arrange the flight home, and ensure the security bond conditions are met so it can be returned.

The placements that last are the ones where both sides feel respected. Regular check-ins, fair treatment, and small gestures of recognition go further than most employers expect.
