How to Interview a New Myanmar Maid: Questions That Reveal the Real Person
You are not testing her grammar. You are testing her functional English, her attitude, and her ability to prioritize safety.
OPENING PARAGRAPH
A 30-minute video interview is your best chance to see who you are hiring before she arrives. But if you are interviewing a new Myanmar helper, you must adjust your expectations. She is not a fluent English speaker. She is a zero-based learner who has just completed about 4 weeks of intensive training at EMK Maid School.
The objective of the interview is threefold:
-
To test her basic functional English ability (can she understand simple instructions?).
-
To gauge her attitude (is she willing to learn and be corrected?).
-
To see how she responds to work priorities, especially when safety is involved.
Here is how to interview her effectively.
Rules for a Realistic Interview
1. Lower your expectation of linguistic fluency.
She has had about 4 weeks of English training. She will understand basic household instructions, but she will not be able to hold a deep conversation. Judge her willingness to learn, not her grammar.
2. Speak softly and slowly.
Loud, fast English will intimidate her and shut down the conversation. Speak slowly, use simple words, and give her time to process what you said before she answers.
3. Expect some translation for complex questions.
If you ask a complicated question about emergency scenarios, she may need the agency representative to translate. That is normal. You are testing how she reacts when she understands the scenario, not her translation speed.
Why the Language Barrier Shrinks Fast
Do not let her basic English on Day 1 discourage you. Myanmar people have a naturally short learning curve when it comes to picking up languages and dialects.
Because they are immersed in the household, many Myanmar helpers adapt incredibly fast. It is very common for a helper to arrive speaking basic English, and within a few months, be able to understand and speak conversational Mandarin, or even local dialects like Hokkien, to communicate with an elderly grandparent. Their 4 weeks at EMK is just the foundation—the real learning accelerates once they are in your home.
WHAT TO ASK
4 Questions That Reveal Her Attitude and Safety Instincts
1. "Can you cook rice?" (Simple, factual questions)
-
Why: Start with very simple yes/no or one-word answer questions to build her confidence and test her basic functional English.
2. "If the baby is crying and the soup is boiling, what do you do first?"
-
Why: She might not know the word "boiling," but if the translator helps her understand, you want to see if she prioritizes the baby's safety. You are looking for safety instincts and how she prioritizes tasks.
3. "If you don't understand my instruction, what will you do?"
-
Why: You want her to say, "I will ask you." You do not want a helper who guesses and makes mistakes. Our EMK training teaches them to ask questions.
4. "Are you willing to learn new things?"
-
Why: You want to see a smile and an enthusiastic "Yes." A helper with a good attitude will learn your household routines and your language in weeks.
How A1 Housekeeper Prepares and Supports Helpers
Because our helpers train at EMK Maid School, they spend 4 weeks learning the vocabulary they actually need—cleaning, cooking, baby care, and safety. We arrange the video interview for you, and if needed, we sit in to help translate the difficult parts so you can focus on her attitude.
We also reinforce their learning on the job:
-
Google Translate Training: We teach them how to use Google Translate responsibly on their phones to look up words they don't know and translate conversations, making them more independent.
-
The 5 English Modules: Every helper is given a copy of our 5 specialized oral English modules (General, Baby Care, School-going Child-Minding, Elderly Care, and Special Needs). They bring these with them to Singapore to read up and continue practising in their free time. Learn More: Our English Training Syllabus
